The use of wedding veils originated from the ancient Romans who believe that evil spirits would be attracted to the bride; hence, they cover the bride’s face with a cloth/linen to confuse the evil spirits and conceal her identity. This piece of cloth or linen is now known to us as “wedding veil”.Nowadays, wedding veil is an important part of the bridal assemble; it fact, designers use bridal veils as accents to their wedding gowns. Bridal veils can be classified in different ways.
According to fabric, a wedding veil can be:
- Bridal Illusion or Tulle Veil:Is an affordable bridal veil made from 100% tulle. It is a good very material for a blusher -- the top or first layer of a two-tier veil that is brought forward to cover the face. However, because silk tulle is synthetic, it will eventually turn yellow and is not suitable to be handed down to the next generation.
- English Netting Veil: Is more expensive than tulle but it will stand to the test of time because it is made from 100% cotton. However, English netting is not suitable for blusher because it will hold its shape and will not flow like the other two fabrics.
- Silk Tulle Veil: Is the most expensive veil fabric because aside from being made from 100% silk, it is very soft and it flows elegantly. It drapes better than English netting and as sheer as tulle when used as blusher.
According to layer, a bridal veil can be:
- One-Tier Bridal Veil which only covers the back part of the bride’s hair and body
- Two-Tier Bridal Veil which has a blusher (which is the top layer of the veil this is brought forward to cover the face) and a second layer which covers the back part of the bride’s hair and body.
- Three-Tier Bridal Veil which has a shoulder-length blusher, a waist-length second layer and elbow-length to floor length third layer.
According to length, a wedding veil can be:
- Vintage Visor Wedding Veil:This is a one-tier veil that only covers the bride’s face just like a visor. This type of veil is a perfect match for a vintage inspired wedding dress.
- Bouffant Wedding Veil: This is perfect for brides with short hair; this veil just touches the top of the bride’s shoulders.
